Title: Gauging Interest: OldG Warframe game nights - Xbox
Post by: Uncle Orbius on January 22, 2019, 01:05:04 pm
From zero to.... somewhere else.

I'm a Warframe noob, I've put some hours in (not loads), but I think this is a quality looter-shooter given it's a free to play game and consistently in the top 10 of the Steam charts when it comes to the PC crowd.

I have a feeling it would be more enjoyable squading up (or whatever the term is in Warframe), with other OldGamerz

Who fancies coming along for the ride?

Interested

I've only played an hour and have no idea what I'm doing. Depending on night put me down as interested.

There's a tutorial walkthrough tutorial right at the start, it might me good to have a go at that on your own to get a feel of it. There's also plenty of YouTube videos out there for you to see what it's about.

I've given it a quick go tonight and it looks alright. So add me to the yes list. Is there a certain  point that you need to get to, to be able to play together?

There are teams of 4.
I don't think you need to get to any certain level to play together, you just need to finish the intro level and get your weapons and choose which Warframe you want to start off in. (most start off with Excalibur)

To get together we just set 'friends only' on the menu screen (top left). and then we go round the blue flashing nodes on planet Earth and then on to other planets.

I kinda like the original incarnation of this. But didnt get around to playing it. Its somewhat different these days though I gather.. But isnt it now way more dashy abouty, runny up the wallsy, jumpy jumpy jumpy ? (Which put me right off)

Never played the original version, but the fluid movement system (dunny up the wallsy!? ;D ) is part of the attraction for me personally. Many other improvements have been made also, it’s a much better game for it.

Excalibur is definitely the most popular starter choice, as correctly modded is still strong at high level, but there’s nothing wrong with the other two starter frames either. You actually get a better version of Excalibur (Umbra) later on. Volt has great crowd control and can give speed boost to his team (movement and reload). Mag is the toughest to play when you only have starter mods and she’s a bit squishy, but she can shred bosses when you get the hang of her powers. Whoever you don’t pick you can acquire later.

Orbs is correct, unfortunately this isn’t cross platform. PC is usually one version ahead of consoles.

Setting up an Oldg clan dojo is a huge amount of work, and would take some dedication to research and provide the resources required. Although it would be very cool, just wanted to let you know it’s a lot of time/effort to do so.

If you need help with anything just shout. ;)

Platform = xbox as per thread title.

Don't worry Homer, Warframe is not for everyone, as it's quite a grindy looter shooter.

I tried it a month or so ago. Gave it an hour, which I assume is not enough, but was a touch underwhelmed.

After playing the tutorial / first mission about a year ago I played another hour or so tonight. Looks like it could be quite addictive, but I don't mind a grind. I didn't fully master the loadouts and set to auto. I guess in the long run will need to work it out. The missions so far are really short. Are they all like this Detski? They were also very easy but I guess they get harder later on as you move off earth?

Some of the mission types are referred to as endless, like Defence or Survival. You can exit after 5mins and technically complete that node on the Star Chart (which is your initial aim as a new player) but you can also opt to stay. They get harder, but the reward pool gets better.

It’s pretty easy to begin with, but it does pick up. It gets harder but you also get stronger with weapons and modding. At higher levels you can be taken down fairly quick if you’re not prepared.

The start could be done better, it hasn’t changed much since launch (2013!) where many other things have changed. Between the daunting amount to learn and it being a bit too easy I can see why new players are sometimes put off. It’s worth sticking with though IMO.

I've played a bit more of this and it seems interesting. The action at the moment is a bit easy and I seem to smash and open a lot of boxes to no real benefit.
I have also taken a look at the mods and stuff, but I'm really not sure about this.

Seems good enough to keep going though

Everything you pick up is useful as a crafting material. All weapons and new frames need to be built and require certain materials to start the build, which then takes a set amount of actual time to complete. You’ll later have the ability to see those boxes on your radar. Pick up everything, even if you have no idea what it is, it will make more sense shortly. You also gain a vacuum effect soon that makes collecting these easier.

To begin with mods drop with  “damaged” written on them and they have a crack on the image of the mod. These can still be used and are just weaker versions of the mod.

For your frame you’ll want Vitality (more health) and Redirection (more shield).

Depending on your weapon you’ll want the corresponding + damage mod. For rifles/bows it’s Serration or for pistols/kunai it’s Hornet Strike. For melee the mod is called Pressure Point.

From there you can equip elemental or/and critical damage, but start with plus raw damage.

I got tips for days, but perhaps a gauging interest thread isn’t really the place. If there’s enough interest maybe a Warframe section can be added to the forum. ;)

Some excellent advice there Detski... The only thing that's changed is the name of the 'damaged' mods. They are no longer labelled damaged but 'flawed' and they no longer have a crack on the image. Still.... the advice is the same don't use them or upgrade them, as I'm told, we'll pick up the proper ones soon enough?

and I have no idea why peeps keep saying it's easy  :o.

There are various modes or mission types, of these 'Defend' and another one that is similar but I forget the name is straight forward. 'Excavation' you defo need 4 players, each to defend the excavator, and there is another mode like it (again I forget the name) where you defend for point on the map. So each player takes a point, then it's straight forward. But the intruder alarm one can be difficult, when it comes to finding your way into the various vaults to collect the data.

Maybe I'll put up an OldG Warframe noob night, and we can get the grandad of Warframe to join us  :D

Grandad of Warframe. Lol, that should be on my forum motto.  ;D

Do use the damaged flawed mods, you will get better ones later but any increase in health/shield/damage will help you get to that point. Upgraded a flawed Serration gives 40% more rifle damage, when Serration gives 160% more, but it will be a while until you get and max out a good Serration mod.

That's important info, I'll start using my 'flawed' mods again till I get the real ones. Thanks grandad  ;D

Too early to tell, but my feeling is, Warframe is still a bit niche.

if things look like they might be regular I'll PM you :)

thanks Jen
